The Kura River is simultaneously a historical corridor, ecological system and economic resource whose condition has direct implications for water security and sustainable development in Azerbaijan and the wider South Caucasus. This article develops an original student research project on the Kura River into a structured interdisciplinary review organized around three questions: how the river has shaped human settlement and cultural memory, how its natural systems support biodiversity and ecosystem services, and what environmental pressures must be addressed to protect its future. The source project emphasized the river’s role in agriculture, hydropower, water supply, fisheries, riparian habitats and public well-being, while also highlighting pollution prevention and careful water use. These ideas are expanded with recent historical, hydrochemical and green-economy literature. The review shows that the Kura has long functioned as both a connector and a resource base in the Caucasus, including through the Early Bronze Age Kura-Araxes cultural landscape. In the present day, the river supports irrigation, energy production, settlements and ecosystems, but downstream water quality, habitat condition and competing water demands require stronger monitoring and integrated management. Recent evidence from the Middle Kura and lower basin further shows that mineralization and other hydroecological pressures vary spatially. The study concludes that the Kura’s future depends on combining water-use efficiency, pollution control, ecosystem restoration, transboundary cooperation and green investment, while maintaining public and youth engagement in river stewardship.
